Mitchel’s sermon, “Who Is the Greatest?”, based on Matthew 18:1–7, 10–14, challenged the world’s definition of greatness by revealing that in God’s kingdom, children are the true VIPs. When the disciples asked who was greatest, Jesus redirected their ambition by placing a child before them, teaching that humility, trust, and dependence on God—not status or power—define greatness. Mitchel emphasized that Jesus not only welcomes children but fiercely protects them, warning against causing even one little one to stumble and reminding us that every child is precious to God. Drawing on the parable of the lost sheep, he highlighted God’s heart for the individual, showing that not one child should be overlooked or forgotten. Reflecting on the church’s recent Vacation Bible School, Mitchel celebrated how volunteers embodied Christ’s love by making each of the 87 children feel seen, safe, welcomed, and valued. The sermon concluded with a call for the church to embrace a childlike faith, intentionally care for every child, and remember that when we welcome, protect, and love children, we are welcoming Jesus himself.
