In John 13:1-20, Jesus models servant leadership by washing His disciples’ feet during the Last Supper. This act of humility, emphasized by Jesus’ “Amen, amen” statements, highlights a core truth: true discipleship is found in serving others, not seeking status. Jesus tells His followers, “Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him” (John 13:16).
The disciples, like many of us, often struggled with understanding leadership through service. Yet, Jesus makes it clear that being sent by Him means embodying His love and humility in every aspect of life. Whether in our families, workplaces, or communities, we are called to shift the focus from ourselves to Christ, becoming His hands and feet to the world.
Ultimately, Jesus’ message is about surrendering pride and embracing the posture of a servant. As we engage with others, the challenge remains: how can we, like Jesus, wrap a towel around our waist and serve in ways that point people not to ourselves but to Him? By doing so, we live out the truth of Jesus’ words: “Whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me” (John 13:20).
